How tedious & cruel was last Week, it afforded me not
One line from my Dearest Judy: my cares, my desires,
My wishes for you, were innumerable, I envied every Breathe
that probably might be wafted ‘ver the tedious Miles, & gently
fall upon yr dear Lips, I have wish’t my self anything the
smallest Insect, to have crept o’er thy soft Bosom & there
have nourish’t endless Love – Thou Darling of my Soul
how shall I express my tenderness for you? Words, you know
were only made to express common things – pity me,
I Love & am bereft of sufficient means to show it, why
wasn’t I made more than man to deserve you? Or why
was you made so much superiour to the rest of the Creation?
only to xxx {^humble} Man’s Vanity & make Him know how great
a distance there is between Him & Perfection –
I waited at Tocester from Fryday to Sunday Morning
in expectation of yr Father Sunday Morn: He came but
cou’d not stay, afterwards sent me a message by two Gentle
= men to desire I would Dine with Him, I follow’d Him to
Stony Stratford, & there was inform’d of His going through the
Town, if you see Him prest my Duty & tell Him I was sorry
I cou’d not follow him, being oblig’d to lie at Northampton
yt night – I cannot say my Dearest Soul when I
shall be with you, not hearing as yet where Gen.ll Wade

[f.62v]
Wade is, but depend upon it, I will not loxse one Moment
of Happyness where in my Power, adieu my only Joy, my
best Lov’d Darling of my Soul adieu, I am entirely yours

Martin Madan to Judith Madan, 28 September 1724

Martin was greatly saddened not to receive a letter from Judith last week. He discusses the pain of being separated from her – he is jealous even of his breath as he imagines it travels several miles to her and is able to touch her lips, and is jealous of small insects that may have crawled over her bosom. He describes her as the darling of his soul. He has been trying to visit and dine with her father, but they have kept missing each other.
