Dear Cousin
I was glad to hear you
arrived safe at home, I suppose you
did not leave Manchester so early as you
intended, which made you so late in
the Evening before you got to Gateacre.
It gave me pleasure to hear that Doro=
=thy had the Measles so favourably.
I have not discovered the answer to
your Puzzle yet, it is a very difficult one
[new page]
to dissolve. My Aunt Hannah
intends sending a little green knife you
left here, by my Father. Mrs Gregs
family left town a few days after
you went, so that I have not had an
opportunity of enquiring about your
scissors; but will send them (if found
when they return) by the first opportuni=
=ty. I am prevented from
going out by unfortunately having
scalded my foot, with some boiling
Coffee; but it is now much better.
Mr Boltons Ball will be on the twenty

third of May on Holy Thursday, he
has promised to give us all Tickets of
admission. I thank you for
your invitation to Gateacre, but it
is not in my power to accept it;
as my Father goes in the mail
tomorrow morning; I shall send this
letter by him. Miss Roberts
desires her love to you and she will
take care to send your letter to Mr
Philips’s soon: Miss H R was in town
last week. Please to remember me to all
friends at Gateacre and remain yrs &c
