My dear Mary Ann
As I am able to
write a few lines to you today,
I auld not omit the opportunity
of thanking you by my Cousin
Holmes, for your pretty present
of Poems, they afforded us some
amusement, but were wanting
[new page]
of Instruction;
I hope my Uncle and Bessey
will arrive safe at home
to-day it was a very fine
morning when they set off.
They paid us a very unexpect=
=ed Visit, but that did not
lessen our pleasure of seeing
them; I wish my Uncle
could have left Bessey with me
[new page]
that I might have enjoyed her
company no I am better.
I have heard very little of the
Ormskirk Roscius and do not
know whether he intends coming
to Manchester. I am tired of
writing, therefore have only to
add that I am yrs Affectionately

Elizabeth Hatfield to Mary-Ann Nicholson, 2 March 1805
Thanking her for the pretty poems but lamenting that they were lacking instruction, describing the weather that they had when Bessy and her Uncle set off from Travis Isle, she is tired of writing and finishes the letter.
