Dear Cousin
In answer to your
last letter, I again take up my pen
to write a few lines to you, by your
Father, who is returning to Gateacre;
I dare say you will be glad to see
him after so long an absence. I am
reading Scientific Dialogues in school.
My Father has given Jonathan and
I another piece of ground for a
[new page]
garden; and we have put it into
tolerable order. I wish you
would lengthen your letters a little:
your last was so very short, that it
hardly afforded me subject for an
answer. My Uncle will inform
you of the state of my Grandfathers
health, with out my giving you any
particulars. Mr Griffiths has
lent us {?Holerofts} Travels, through
Germany, the Netherlands, and France
of which last country, he gives a very
[new page]
entertaining account of the manners
and customs of the Inhabitants.
Mr Holland has begun to attend me
he instructs me in Geography, Arith=

Elizabeth Hatfield to Mary-Ann Nicholson, 9 April 1804
Taking advantage of Mary-Ann's father return home to write, providing details of the books she is reading, they have been gardening, complaining about the shortness of Mary-Ann's last letter, she has been having lessons in geography, arithmetic, mechanics, reading and grammar.
