Come Madan – it is time to go – I must dress
to go to Lady Cowpers – come get you gone &c
yet you say I was impatient to leave you, I staid, ‘till
you wish’t my Absence you confess in yours –
Dear Miss Cowper don’t imagine I ever parted from you
but wth reluctance, it was ever to me a separation of
Soul & Body yr Presence always created an imediate
Joy, yr absence an immediate Pain. Now Judge, if you
accuse me wth Justice – did I look Grave yes=
=terday? Sure you mistake, for you look’t Gay –
I have five creature wth me, pouring down Tea, calling
every moment upon me, little thinking how much better

I am employing myself – well I must submit, I
must go to them – I will be wth you by one Adieu

Martin Madan to Judith Cowper
A response to Judith’s question about why he left so quickly. He described being parted from her as similar to separating soul and body. Being with her brings him great joy, being apart brings him great pain. He asks whether she accused him of having received bad news because he looked sad yesterday, and says that she looked very well and happy. He is being distracted from writing his letter by those around him who want to talk to him and are pouring him tea – he would rather be writing to her, and looks forward to seeing her later that day.
