Dear Brother
I should have written you before
but I have been very unwell of a bad
rheumatic pain in my head, and neck,
but with leeches and other things I am
better, it kept me in the house above a
week, and it has left me rather weak.
I am afraid the Coat will
be spoiled by being so long crimped in
the Bags, but as Father I believe is going
your way soon I hope he will bring them
I will tell him to pay you the money
for them. We have heard you have got
new lodgings I hope you will find them
[new page]
as comfortable as those you have left
I suppose the distance [deleted] {^frightened} you
I remain yrs very sincerely
Thos Bateman
PS The hat fits me
very well but
you have got its
value. Father sends
his love to you T.B.
[change hand] My poor brother did not live a month after the
date of this letter (dying on Sunday morning
the 22nd April) the affection of the head mentioned in it
terminated in water on the brain, which carried
him off after great sufferings from the Monday
preceding – He had completed his 18th year on the 17th
of Jany last past –
