Tho’ you have not heard from me I
have not forgot {^you} & have often thought of writing to
convince you of the truth of it, I have heard by
Mr D frequently of your health, & the dear little girl,
which gave me much pleasure, Mr D din’d with
us yesterday when I prevail’d upon him to let
me have the care of Eliza next week; as I know
[change hand] now Mrs E Wood of Manchester (1824)
[original hand] at such a loose time; servants are too apt to
neglect their duty to others for their own pleasure
I shall esteem myself happy if this little
plan meets your approbation, be assur’d nothing
in my power shall be wanting, for the good of
the Child, & I’m sure her natural disposition is so
happy, that she will be content. I call’d upon
Mrs Whittenbury on Monday, she told me how
Much she was oblig’d to your Mamma for her
Kind invitation of Miss W to Chester, but she
[new page]
cou’d not think of not seeing them especially as
she is herself very low upon the thought of
leaving Town; they have took a Country House
on the other side Newton Heath & are going on
Monday. I had a letter from Sister W last Saturday
They area ll well & Jane Spear [change hand] the late Mrs Proctor who died in 1814 [original hand ] with her fellow
travellers are arriv’d in London. She is to stay
till they come down, which will be in August.
I am much oblig’d for the information by Mr D
respecting Gauze cloaks, I have at present declind’
the thoughts or shoud have troubled you with
a commission; yet by the inclos’d you’ll see
I have still made free to trouble you {^with one} tho’ of a
different nature, I shall esteem it a favor if
you will be kind enough to call upon Mr Jones
with the Bills & amount & get {^them} regularly discharged.
The other to Mr Hodson was brought me last
Week by Mrs Wilson for whom, my Mamma
[new page]
order’d the soap. I shall be much oblig’d to you to
get me a pair of Spanish Leather Slippers, & send
them by the newsman, as soon as they {^can be} got ready
I have sent money for them, I hope at the same
time to hear from you. Mr B joins me in
presenting kindest respects to Mr & Mrs Hodson
yourself, Brothers & Sisters, with Mr Armitages
family, Mrs Whitby’s &c particularly Mrs
Turner; tell her I sincerely wish her joy of her son,
I remain

Rebekah Bateman to Mary Jane Hodson, 11 June 1791
Apologising for not writing but she regularly receives updates on Mary's health and the health of her daughter from Mr D, asking if she can look after baby Eliza next week, suggesting that it will be good for Eliza and promising to take proper care of her, explaining that Miss W can't taken advantage of the invitation to Chester because the thought of leaving town makes her very low, asking Mary to get her some Spanish Leather slippers, and asking about the popularity of Gauze cloaks.
