My Dearest C.
The Quadrupeds arrived here safe & well
this Afternoon. We slept last night at Noble House
We have had delightful Weather, and hitherto to a very
pleasant Journey. The Horse Quadrupeds have behaved
very well, and although mine is a little rough I find
no other Effect but that kind of Weariedness which
one would wish to find after a Journey of 34 Miles in one Day and Which
will probably ensure me a good sleep. I have
not heard of any Want of [?Diaclum] in the party .
Andrews looked a little chegran at seeing the
tremendous Mountains which environ the Devil’s
Cauldron.- As for poor John Allan his Complexion
retained as usual its rosy hue.- He is very careful
to see that every thing about Me is right.- I hear
William Elliot is at this place. We shall contrive to
see him in the Course of the Evening.- We expect to
reach Dumfries tomorrow to Dinner. I shall write
to You again the Day after.-
Since I wrote the above We have
Taken a Walk to the Well which is more than a Mile
