Revd Richard Cumberland to George Cumberland, 11 October 1778
Richard described riding past a beautiful young woman on the road: she had a pretty face, dark brown hair in ringlets, and was wearing a scarlet dress. Richard was so struck be her that he didn’t want to lose sight of her, and endeavoured to find out her identity.
