Some general tips:

  • The ‘Golden Rule’: Please transcribe exactly what is written in the letters (including any exact spelling, capitalization and punctuation). Try to replicate the layout, too (starting a new line when the letter writer does so).
  • Handwriting can be difficult to read. If something is illegible you can simply insert ‘[illeg]’. If you think you know what something says, but are not entirely sure (for example, if you think the word may be ‘butter’), you can insert ‘[?butter]’. Anything in square brackets is your comment (and not in the original).
  • Most letters are more than one page. If you wish to transcribe the whole letter, that’s terrific. But you can also choose to transcribe just one page if you prefer.
  • Your transcription will not go live immediately but will be quickly reviewed before being published on this page.
  • Use our ‘Guidance on Transcription’ if you are unsure how to record something.
Note: This letter has already been transcribed 1 time (some may be pending approval, so not yet visible). Please review these existing transcriptions first to prevent duplicating transcriptions.

Little Longsdon 11th May 1803

My dear James
You will have by this time received,
your Fathers letter, written to you last Sunday.
I am very glad to inclose your for pairs of Cotton
Hose, and your Nankeen trousers, the former, I dare
say you want, but the weather is too cold for wearing
the latter. I send them in a box, if it is useful to
you let it remain at Nottingham, and bring your
things home in the hair trunk you have with
with you at Midsummer - I have been
much engaged during the time your Father has been
his journey, as you will see, when I have the plea=
=sure to see you at Longsdon. Mr B Bapsley gives me
a very good account of your looks. I know you
would have great pleasure in seeing him.

I am going (if all is well in the morning over
to Chesterfield, to stay one night only, and bring back
with me your grandmother – who I hope will make
some stay with us. I shall just have the opportu
=nity of seeing your Sister, who was well on
Monday. Katharine is well, and sends her love to
you – your Father is gone down to Bakewell,
but I expect he will write you a few lines, on
the other side – I am very much engaged this even
=ing, and must hope you will excuse my writing
more. Your Uncle is well and would send his
remembrance if he knew I was writing.
God bless you, my dear James, I am most
affectionately yours,
Eliz’th Longsdon
