I was this day most agreeably surprised by the favor
of a call from Mr Bateman & a letter from my dear friend; the reading
of which gave me great pleasure, especially that part of it, which signifies
your intention of seeing London soon; I hope whenever the time is
fixed you will give me a Line that I may be at home, ready
to receive one who: is {^so} very dear to me by the ties of friendship
& Christian affection. – I sincerely rejoice with you on the
recent manifestations you have experienced of the Love of God to you
thro’ Jesus Christ, to investigate this Love is the employment of the
heavenly host, & will be {^of} the redeemed to all Eternity
[cut]
no wonder the
Angels desired to look into this great Mystery; but with all their looking
they will never be able to comprehend it or to fathom its Abyss.
Well might a great Apostle cry out, Oh the depth & height, the length
& breadth of the Love of Christ; it passeth knowledge
[new page]
To it not strange, that after all we should doubt, & even sometimes
call in question all that we have experienced, & felt, & dashed of the
word of life, & of the comforts of the Holy Spirit; but so it is, &
from what my dear friend so much & so firstly laments, the treachery
of a corrupted deceitful heart, & the prevalence of unbelief. True it is
the Christians Life is a warfare; but there are peculiar days of battle
when the Enemy comes in like a flood; well were it for us if they
were only external; but alas our worst & most dangerous foes are
they of our own house, & concur with others for our destruction.
[cut]
I must now beg a share in
Your prayers - & pray present my respects to Mr Mrs & Miss Clegg
& believe me I always am dear Mrs Bateman’s sincere & affct friends
