Dear Mrs Bateman,
I have been waiting from day {^to day} in expectation of
seeing or hearing from you – being ill myself I requested a friend to call
& know how you, Mrs Wilson, & the dear little Infant is? & likewise to inform
me if there was any probability of your favoring me with a visit in
Russell St – as I have not received any intelligence; I now request that
you’ll indulge me with a line to satisfy me in these particulars – for this
week past I have been confined with a violent Cold & swell’d Face otherwise
I should have [illeg] myself the pleasure to have call’d of you, & Mrs Wilson
before now. – Am I not to enjoy your company for one hour before your
return; after having longed so many years to see you – if you find it {?impo=}
{?=ssible} calling on me, I will wait on you any time you appoint if in health.
The friends of Jesus need to keep close to one another, their Enemies are
Many & Powerful; over watching & waiting to find them of their guard that
so they may be able to prevail against them & bring them into condemnation.
[new page]
how much more than ought we to be on our Watch Tower praying always with
all prayer, & supplication in the Spirit & watching thereunto with all {?persons}
holding fast the unity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace. This was the
legacy our departed Lord bequeathed to his disciples when he was about to
leave them & ascend into Glory & a blessed bond of Union it is by which
the Church is cemented together as it were into one body; having been
made partakers of the same faith, being renewed in the Spirits of their {?mind}
& created anew in Christ Jesus; they are all the Children of Peace; the
Kingdom into which they are translated is a peaceful Kingdom, & their
Saviour is the Prince of Peace. We may truly {^say} happy, thrice happy
They {?unto} are the subjects of this grace.
I hope Mr Bateman & your dear Children were all well
when you heard from them last - & also Mr & Mrs Clegg – pray present
my kind respects to Mr & Mrs Wilson & believe me as Ever your sincere
& much oblig’d friend & humble Sert

Anna Allwood to Rebekah Bateman, 4 September

Reprimanding her for not being in contact with an update on her own health and that of her child, on her own confinement with a cold and swollen face, and meditating at length about her relationship with faith and with God.
