In answer to your questions about the arms of
Chaderton, he says we are undoubtedly entitled to
quarter with the Cross (in the first and fourth,) the
three z, in the 2d and fourth compartment of
the shield) as borne by our ancestor Lawrence
Chaderton – Mr Radcliffe at the Herald-Office
assur’d him that on the credit of nine quarterings
having been borne by a Chaderton, a hundred years
before our line is legally traceable, he would in
similar circumstances bear them all, but at the
same time this new quartering weakens our Claim
to the Trafford arms – this is all he says on the subject
I am well in health, but have an inflammation in
my eyes which is very general here, so that it is
painful to write – Believe me ever affectionately your’s

Fragment of a letter, primarily responding to questions about the history / heraldry of the Chaderton family, and closes with a discussion of Barbara’s health. She is generally well, but has an inflammation of the eyes which makes writing very difficult and painful.
